Welcome to Trinidad!
The largest of Trinidad and Tobago's islands, Trinidad is home to approximately 95 percent of the country's population and offers both uniquely electric urban areas and lush natural environments. Its sprawling cosmopolitan cities reflect the sights, sounds and smells of a diverse mix of cultures. Aromas of Creole and Indian food waft through restaurant windows, steelpan and calypso rhythms pump from clubs and bars, and brilliantly coloured fabrics adorn street stalls while big, shiny malls showcase windows full of the latest fashions. Located on the northwest coast of the island, Port-of-Spain is the country's capital and commercial centre. For a bargain shopping experience buzzing with local clientele, don't miss Charlotte Street or the Central Market. San Fernando is southern Trinidad's largest city and the country's industrial heart. From the top of the famous San Fernando Hill, one can see as far as the Northern Range or even to Venezuela on an especially clear day. Venturing to the northern and eastern coasts of Trinidad will unveil wild tropical forests, secluded villages and idyllic beaches. From March to September, visitors journey to the northeast coast's unspoiled beaches, particularly Grande Riviere and Matura, for the unforgettable experience of witnessing leatherback turtles nesting in the sand. However, most will know Trinidad for its annual Carnival—an exuberant celebration of all that is Trinidad and Tobago, held just before Lent.Hotels & Motels
