The smaller of Trinidad
and Tobago's two main islands, Tobago is a 300-sq-km (116 sq
mi) natural paradise and prime eco-tourism destination. It is located
31 km (19 mi) northeast of Trinidad and is the spot Trinidadians go to
get away from it all. Hugging Rockley Bay on the southeast shore,
Scarborough is Tobago's biggest town and home to the Tobago
Museum and Scarborough
Botanical Gardens. Just east of Scarborough, Bacolet
Bay is a picturesque representation of a typical desert
island beach and was the setting for the 1960 Swiss Family Robinson
film. Heading southwest leads to Crown Point, a popular holiday spot
featuring resorts, vacation homes, famed beaches such as Pigeon
Point and Store
Bay, and the international
airport. Glass bottom boat and snorkelling tours cruise to Buccoo
Reef, a protected marine park and the country's most famous
coral reef. A trip north along Tobago's west coast introduces visitors
to increasingly stunning and unspoiled scenery. Visitors can bask on
idyllic and secluded beaches backed by rain forest such as Englishman's
Bay. The mountainous heart of the island is carpeted by the Tobago
Forest Reserve—the western hemisphere's largest protected
rain forest—and continuing to the northern tip of Tobago, one will
discover the charming fishing villages of Charlotte and Speyside, an
area known for some of the Caribbean's most dazzling diving.
